But Alagoas is much more than beaches. Inland, the landscape changes to green hills, waterfalls and canyons, offering opportunities for hiking and other outdoor adventures. The state also has a rich history and cultural heritage, with places such as Penedo, known for its baroque churches and colonial architecture, Marechal Deodoro, with its historic buildings, and Quilombo dos Palmares, one of the most important sites connected to the history of resistance by enslaved Africans in Brazil.
